The use of media these days is very prominent and usually essential. For 24 hours I tracked all of my media usage, this includes browsing the internet, checking amazon, endless scrolling, watching tv, and more.
The Morning
I woke up on a Friday at 7am, the first thing I did was turn off my alarm on my phone and check for any important messages. Usually emails and some social media notifications are what I wake up to. Since I worked at 10am that morning, I laid in bed for about 30 minutes, checked some instagram stories, and did some minor scrolling on TikTok. Once I got up I put the phone down and turned on Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix on my computer while I did my physical therapy stretches. Once that was done around 8am, I went for a little walk outside and opened Spotify to listen to Sabrina Carpenter’s new album, Man’s Best Friend. After a mile or so I returned home while remaining on Spotify since I wanted to complete listening before work. The songs played in the background while I started to do my makeup and pack a lunch for work. After finishing my morning routine I was set to leave for my 10am-5:30pm shift at Starbucks. Once I am in my car I check the Apple maps app to see how bad the traffic is, then I turn my music back on and head to work. While all of that was happening I would also check my apple watch for the time, any notifications that dinged my hand, and turning the workout app on and off for my walk.
Now the time is approximately 9:52am and I am chilling in the parking lot. Before every shift I will do a mini phone check. I scrolled TikTok for a minute or so and checked Instagram again. Once it is 9:56am, I walk in the door. When I set my stuff down in the back I will take my watch off and put it around my ankle since we can’t wear it on our wrists due to the dress code. I turn my phone on work mode to reduce notifications and distractions. During the beginning of my shift I would pull out my phone to check the time or respond to some snaps. I was placed on customer support that morning, which is essentially doing tasks mostly in the back, and this allowed me to be on my phone a bit (oops).
The Afternoon
12pm was when I got my first 10 minute break. I made myself a brown sugar sweet cream cold brew and sat in the back scrolling TikTok for 10 minutes. During my breaks I prefer to turn my brain off and mindlessly scroll to decompress from the noise and chaos that is working at a high volume Starbucks. Now back to work and the morning shift supervisor handed off to me so now I am in charge. One of my main jobs as a shift is to do the daily managerial tasks, which all start from the store ipads. Constantly I will have to check the daily schedule on the ipad to see when people need their breaks and when people arrive or leave. Now it is around 1:30 and time for my 30 minute break. Finally lunch time, my favorite. Instead of mindlessly scrolling the entire time, I decided to post a video on TikTok, which I try to do everyday. I’ve been posting stories/ skits since January 2023 and have almost 500k followers combining TikTok and Instagram with over 450k on TikTok. I am at a point where content creation is more than just a hobby and is another job.
Finding time to post videos, even if I am at my other job, is a priority of mine. Although content creation requires me to make time to spend on social media, I definitely spend more time scrolling then creating and engaging, it is something I am working on though. back to work at 2pm and phone goes bye bye. Checking the ipad continues as well as checking my phone a few times when I get a snapchat notification. The store cleaning has begun and I leave my phone out of my pocket in the back to really focus on being efficient. Once I get my last 10 minute break at 4pm, I doom scroll on TikTok of course. At 5:30pm I clock out, get in my car, and turn Sabrina’s album back on to give it a second listen.
The Night
I arrived at home around 6pm, made some dinner while watching Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix and continued to watch TV while I ate. After dinner, I decided to go for another walk. Airpods went in and Spotify went back on. Sometimes for walks I will listen to an audiobook or podcast, but when new music comes out, like Sabrina’s album, that’s all I will listen to for weeks, hyper-fixation tendencies I guess. During my walk I would snap people back and forth, check Instagram and TikTok, look at my email, use my notes app to plan my Saturday, create alarms to make sure I was productive Saturday, and more.
Now that my walk is over, I decided I was bored and started matching/ chatting with people on Hinge and Tinder. There were conversations about possibly hanging out with some friends and maybe going out but ultimately the consensus was everyone was tired. Although I could’ve worked on homework or started packing for my upcoming trip Sunday, I laid in bed for 2-3 hours with Netflix in the background and going back and forth between social medias. Not how I like to spend my nights but oh well. The last thing I do before bed is turn on the calm app and play a sleep meditation. I went to bed around midnight and woke up Saturday around 7am, checked my phone for anything urgent, and went back to bed until 11am.
